Well, since I've been trying to make sense out of this world within our world, I figured that the big creatures (hello dragons) would be an issue.
No, they aren't being disregarded, but they certainly are being downsized. Quite literally. Let me start at the beginning: I came upon this line of thought while randomly researching all I could about gryphons. One of my obsessions of the moment. Well, I was looking at their size, then reading about why most humans haven't seen gryphons. Their explanation: Gryphons are solitary creatures and tend to avoid humans.
....uh what? Sorry, but look at the world. Even Mt Everest isn't safe! Humans are everywhere, we're exploring our own world, inside and out. Chances are, unless these creatures are extremely crafty, they wouldn't escape our notice. Therefore, I had a slight "uh oh" moment. I, of course, brought this to my lovely fiance who's brain is amazing. He and I walked through the problem, then came up with an answer. (Have I mentioned I love him yet?)
Well, first it was dragons. We figured that dragons, in order to be more easily hidden (hello Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire?), they would have to be smaller. There are different species of dragons such as wyverns and drakonas. Typically speaking, in my world within our world, wyverns are smaller than humans, or about the size of. They are usually about the size of a medium sized dog, such as a german shepherd or a dalmation. They have hind legs and wings, their bodies are more elongated to appear more snake-like than reptile-like. Their usual colours are a bit flashier: reds, yellows, greens, blues. They have forked tongues and vertical pupils. (Which would mean they're more used to catching their prey in mid-air.)
Then Drakonas. Drakonas are Lithuanian Dragons that are more like Hydras with their multiple heads. In legend, they are usually found with multiple heads, but sometimes they can have a single head. Well, I adapted this. These Drakonas are about the size of a house cat. Their wings can pick them up to around ten feet in the air, but they can't really go anywhere with them. In addition, they have forked tongues and vertical pupils; they have barbs on the end of their tail for defense (extra, since they're smaller than the others that usually try to take their babies). Their colours are usually purple, blue, or green. They have three heads commonly, but two heads aren't really all that rare. One head is rare, but it's not as if a Drakonas with one head is prized.
Lastly, Dragons. Good old dragons. They're about the size of a small horse, sometimes they're bred to be bigger. They generally carry their owners. The difference with these is that their tongues are normal, like a horse's, really. Also, their eyes are horizontal. They have four limbs and so are most used to catching their prey on the ground instead of in the air. (The prey on the ground is bigger.) These can be found in the colours of brown, black, and royal blue. They usually don't have any facial markings, but occassionally one does. They can carry their riders a lot further if they're running than if they're flying.
Gryphons: I haven't gotten too far with these, so I'll edit this part when I come up with them.
